Free Electrical Estimates: Are They Really Free?

free electrical estimates

'Free is never free', isn't that the saying?  So when a company advertises 'free electrical estimates', is there a catch?  And what defines an 'estimate', because, really, isn't anytime a company gives you pricing they're giving you an estimate?

When it comes to estimates, it's important to distinguish the difference between an estimate and a diagnostic service call.  With most companies, this distinction is the key difference between a service being free or it costing money.  So, what is a 'diagnostic service call' and what is a 'free estimate'?

What is a 'Diagnostic Service Call'?

When it comes to a diagnostic service call, most companies consider this different than coming out to give an estimate.  If you're experiencing symptoms of a problem, like sparks flying or a total power loss, this will require figuring out what is wrong.  In situations like these, most electricians will quote for performing diagnostic services, and they may even charge to just show up at your door.  After diagnosing the problem, a quote for whatever repair is determined needed will be provided.

What is a 'Free Electrical Estimate'?

If you already know what your problem is, like if you know your panel is bad or that your wiring needs to be replaced, and no diagnostics will be required, then what you're needing is just a free electrical estimate.  In these cases, most electricians will come out at no charge, introduce themselves, and leave you with a written estimate for services.  To do this, they'll come take a look, maybe some measurements, and provide a written repair or replacement quote at no upfront cost.  Whether for a ceiling fan, outlet, or major repair, it will still a free estimate.

So, How Does Surfside Do It?

Unlike our competitors, we actually offer both free estimates and free repair assessments.  In many cases, extensive troubleshooting is not required to figure out your problem.  Having years of experience, it sometimes takes just showing up and laying eyes on your problem to know what you need.  That's why we charge no service call fees.  Whether you know what your problem is or need it figured out, we'll show up for free.  From there, we'll assess the next best steps and provide estimates for everything before performing any work.
